The Dancer Leaves the Stage

Samkhya Karika 59

Meaning · English

As a dancer stops dancing once she has shown herself to the audience, so nature withdraws once she has revealed herself to the self.

The question behind this is simple. If nature acts for the sake of the self's freedom, why would it ever stop acting? Samkhya's answer: it stops when the showing is complete. Two names matter. Prakriti is nature, everything that changes, from matter to thought. Purusha is the witness, the pure consciousness that only sees. Samkhya holds that prakriti's whole activity is a display put on before purusha. Gaudapada reads the dancer closely. She performs songs and music bound up with rasas such as the erotic and with emotions drawn from epic tales, and when her work is done she leaves the dance. Nature likewise shows herself in all her layers: the intellect (buddhi), the sense of 'I' (ahamkara), the subtle elements, the senses and the gross elements. Once all of that has been fully seen for what it is, nothing is left to perform, and she withdraws. Classical Samkhya needs no god to end the performance; it ends because its purpose has been met.

Picture an estate agent walking a buyer through a house. She opens every room, the cellar, the attic, the cupboard under the stairs. When the buyer has seen it all, she hands over the keys and leaves. She is not dismissed or defeated. The tour is simply finished. Nature, in Samkhya, is the guide, and her leaving marks the point where nothing is left unseen.

This is a dualist picture: a seeing consciousness on one side, everything seen, including the mind's own workings, on the other. Most philosophers and neuroscientists today lean physicalist and find no evidence for a witness that exists apart from the brain. Yet the hard problem of consciousness, why any of this processing is felt at all, remains open, so the question Samkhya asks has not been settled. One part travels well. Psychology finds that stepping back and observing a thought or feeling as a passing event, rather than living inside it, often loosens its grip. Cognitive therapists call this decentering. That is a modest, loose parallel, not support for the full metaphysics. And modern physics has no place for nature acting with a purpose; the dancer remains a metaphor.
