Thus the sages have counted the tattvas in many different ways. All of it is reasonable, because each rests on sound reasoning. What is unfitting for those who know?

Krishna has just walked Uddhava through the counts: seven, six, four, seventeen, sixteen, thirteen, eleven, eight and nine. Now he closes the list with a ruling. Two words carry it. Tattva means 'that-ness', a basic principle of existence, from tat, 'that'. Nyayya means 'fitting, sound', from nyaya, the method of reasoning that leads a mind step by step to a conclusion. Yuktimattva is 'having reasons behind it', from yukti, joining things together into an argument. The clauses are three. The sages have counted the principles in many ways. Each count is sound, because each is built on real reasoning. And for those who truly know, what is there to find fault with? Krishna answers a worry Uddhava could hold: if the sages disagree, someone must be wrong. Krishna says the number depends on where the counter draws the lines. One counts the mind apart from the self, another folds it in. The counts differ, the thing counted does not. Sridhara Svami reads the verse as settling that these differences are no flaw in the sages. The listener is asked to stop treating a different count as a threat, and to look at the reasoning behind it before judging it.

Several people describe the same house. One counts the rooms, one the doors, one the floors, one the walls. The numbers all differ and none of them is wrong. The house is the one reality, and each count is a sound way of dividing it.

1. Today, when someone tells you they see a matter differently from you, a family member or a colleague, pause before answering. 2. Ask them one question: how did you get there? Listen to the whole answer without correcting it. 3. Say aloud to yourself what they were counting and where they drew their lines. 4. Only then say your own view, and note whether the gap was in the facts or only in the dividing.

A nurse finishes a double shift and sits in the staff room while two senior doctors disagree about a patient's care. One speaks of the lungs, the other of the heart. She is tired and wants one of them to be simply wrong. The verse would slow her down in steps. First, she asks what each is counting. Second, she sees that both are looking at the same patient from different starting points. Third, she asks the one question that matters: which reasoning fits this person's signs? Ordinary experience bears this out: a tired mind grabs for a quick winner and loser, and rest makes room for careful looking. Medicine itself has many ways to sort one body, by organ, by symptom, by cause. The verse does not say every claim is true. It speaks of counts built on sound reasoning, by those who know. It does not settle a clinical decision, and it is no substitute for the doctor who must make one.
