Who Can Settle Doubts

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 43.48

Meaning · English

I call him a true knower of Brahman who clears away the doubts of others because he has first cleared every doubt of his own, and who knows the Self.

Three terms carry this. Brahmana comes from brahman, whose root sense is "to grow vast". Here it names one who knows that vastness, not just someone born into a class. Samshaya, doubt, joins sam, "together", with a root meaning "to lie": a mind lying on two sides at once, unable to choose. Atmavid joins atman, the Self, with vid, "to know": a knower of the Self. Now the clauses. Sanatsujata says the true brahmana is the person who clears up other people's doubts. That person has first settled all of his own. And he knows the Self. The three belong together. He can answer others because he has answered himself, and what settled him was knowing the Self, not piling up arguments. Why say this to Dhritarashtra? The king cannot sleep. His doubt is whether death is real, and he is afraid of it. Sanatsujata tells him what a trustworthy teacher looks like, and what an answer looks like once it is found. In this reading, death holds no terror for such a person, the way a tiger made of straw frightens no one who has handled it. The fear lived in the doubt about the Self, and the doubt is gone.

Think of a guide who has walked a mountain trail in the dark, slipped at the stream crossing, and found the firm stones. A hiker asks the way, and the guide does not read from a map. He says where to put each foot. His answers carry weight because he has already crossed. Doubts settled by one's own crossing can settle another's.

1. Tonight, write one doubt you carry in a single sentence on paper. 2. Sit for five minutes with it. Ask whether it is a question you can actually settle, or one you keep asking out of fear. 3. The next time someone brings you a worry, hear it to the end before answering. Notice whether you speak from what you have settled yourself or from what you only heard. 4. This week, notice one doubt of your own that you have been passing on to others as if it were settled.
