Gathering the Scattered Self

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 43.52

Meaning · English

Hold every sense fully in check, and the mind along with them. Then look for Brahman, the one said to dwell within your own self.

Two words carry the verse. Indriya means a sense: the eye, the ear and the other outward-reaching powers. Manas is the mind, the part that takes in what the senses bring and chases after it. Brahman is the Real that the text says lives within the self, not out in the world. The verse has two clauses. First, restrain all the senses completely, and the mind too. Second, with that done, seek Brahman as what is already inside. Sanatsujata is answering a king who cannot sleep because he fears death. His reason is that fear and desire send the mind outward, toward things that come and go. A mind pulled that way never looks at what it stands on. So he asks Dhritarashtra to pull attention back first, and only then to search. The restraint is not an end in itself. It clears the ground for the looking. Nilakantha reads the mind's restraint here as the preparation that makes the inner search possible. The text's claim is that death touches what is gathered and sought outwardly, while what is sought within is not reached by it.

Think of a room with every window open on a windy day. Papers fly, doors bang, and nobody can read a single page. Close the windows one by one, and the room goes still enough to read. The senses and mind are the windows; the stillness is what lets you find the thing written inside.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes before sleep with your phone away and the lights low. 2. Close your eyes. Notice sounds, then smells, then the feel of the bed, and let each one pass without following it. 3. When your mind runs off to a worry, notice that it left, and bring it back. 4. Last, ask quietly, "Who is aware of all this?" and stay with that question without hunting for an answer.
