A Second Birth

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 44.2

Meaning · English

Father and mother make the body. But there is another birth, the one that comes from a teacher's instruction. That birth is holy. It does not grow old, and it does not die.

Three words carry the teaching. Acarya is the teacher. It comes from a root meaning to move toward and to conduct oneself, so he is someone who teaches by how he lives as much as by what he says. Ajara means without old age. Amara means without death. Sanatsujata is answering a king who asks whether death is real, and he begins where the king stands, in a body. Parents make that body. He does not wave this birth away, but he says it comes with ageing and dying built in. Then he names a second birth, brought about by a teacher's instruction. He calls it sacred, free of old age, free of death. Sanatsujata teaches that what instruction gives is not made of the stuff that wears out. The king is lying awake over loss, so the sage does not argue about death in the abstract. He points to a birth the king has not yet taken, one that does not belong to the body's clock. That is why the verses after this one ask the student to honor the teacher as a parent.

A girl is carried into the world by her parents' work, in a body that will tire and wear. Years later a neighbor teaches her to read, and a page opens that no tiredness touches. The body is the first birth. The reading is the second, and age does not reach it.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and think of one person whose teaching changed how you see something. 2. Write one plain sentence on what exactly you learned from them. 3. Notice which of your days' habits came from your body's needs and which came from something you were taught. 4. If that person is alive, send them a short thank-you this week.
