Humble Work, Quiet Temper

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 44.5

Meaning · English

The student should treat no task as beneath him, and should let no anger settle in him.

Two instructions sit side by side here. The first is about work. The student is told to count no service as low. The Sanskrit idea is that no duty for the teacher is small, because the one serving is learning to put pride aside. The second is about anger, krodha, which is the heat that rises when pride is touched. The text pairs them for a reason: a person who thinks a task is beneath him is already half angry when asked to do it. Sanatsujata is speaking to Dhritarashtra, a king who cannot sleep and who asked whether death is real. His answer so far has been that the teacher of Brahman is to be honoured like a parent. These lines describe the habits of the one who receives such teaching. In the reading of death as forgetting, they matter because pride and anger are what cloud the mind and make a person lose sight of what he is. The student keeps the mind clear by doing humble work without resentment. I do not have Nilakantha's comment on this line, so I add none.

Think of a glass of muddy water left alone on a table. Stir it and it stays cloudy. Leave it still and the dirt sinks. Pride and anger are the stirring hand; humble work and a calm temper are the stillness that lets the water clear.

1. Today, pick one small chore you usually avoid or think is beneath you, such as washing dishes or carrying something for someone. Do it fully and without comment. 2. While you work, notice any small sting of annoyance. Name it silently as anger and let it pass before you speak. 3. Tonight, for two minutes, recall whether the chore felt lighter by the end.
