Clinging to Pleasure

Yoga Sutras 2.7

Meaning · English

Attraction is what lingers on pleasure: the mind stays with a happiness it has known and keeps reaching back toward it.

Three words carry the sutra. Raga comes from a root meaning to dye or colour. It is the tint that pleasure leaves on the mind, so the mind is drawn to it again. Sukha is pleasure or ease, anything that felt good. Anushayi means lying along behind, following and staying. So raga is the pull that stays behind after pleasure has passed. The whole sutra reads: attraction is the lingering of the mind on what pleased it. Pleasure arrives and goes. Raga is what remains afterwards as wanting. Patanjali does not call the pleasure itself the fault. The fault is the staying and the reaching back. He says this because he is listing the afflictions, the five roots of suffering. Ignorance and self-assertion come first in the sutras before it. Attraction is the next to grow from them. A mind that takes itself to be the one who enjoys will cling to what it enjoys. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads raga as craving or greed for pleasure, and for whatever brings it, in someone who remembers having felt it. He ties the pull to memory. Later commentators mostly follow him.

A cat lies in a patch of sun on the floor. The sun moves on and the patch slides away, yet the cat keeps returning to the old spot, pressing the cold boards where the warmth used to be. The warmth is the pleasure. The cat's returning is raga.

1. At your next meal, eat the first few bites slowly and enjoy them fully. Then notice the moment the taste fades and the hand moves toward more. 2. Tonight, spend two minutes recalling one pleasant moment from today. Notice whether the mind goes back to it by itself, and what it wants from it. 3. For one day, when something pleasant ends, name what is left behind in a single word, such as wanting, memory or plan. Only name it.
