Recoil From Pain
Yoga Sutras 2.8
Meaning · English
Aversion is what pain leaves behind in the mind: a lingering pull away from whatever brought the hurt, or seems to.
Three words carry the sutra. Dvesha comes from a root meaning to dislike or shrink from. It is aversion, the push away. Duhkha is pain, and its old sense is a cramped, narrow space, a place with no room. Anushayi means lying along after, from anu, after, and shi, to lie. It is what stays behind once the event has passed. Put together: aversion is the push-away that stays in the mind after pain, and it attaches itself to whatever is linked with that pain. Patanjali says this because he is listing the afflictions that cloud the mind. The one before this describes the pull toward what felt good. This one is its mirror. Pain is an event. Aversion is the mark it leaves, and the mark goes on acting when the pain itself is gone. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, says aversion is the resentment and recoil that arise in someone who has known pain and remembers it, directed at the pain and at what caused it. The later commentators do not change this in any way that matters.
A child once burned by a hot kettle now pulls her hand back from every kettle, even a cold one on a shelf. The burn is long healed. What remains is the flinch. Aversion is that flinch, kept in the mind and aimed at anything that resembles the old hurt.
1. Once today, when you notice a sharp dislike of a person, a task, a food or a place, pause for a few breaths. 2. Ask quietly: what earlier hurt does this remind me of? Do not hunt for a long answer. A single guess is enough. 3. Note whether the dislike belongs to what is in front of you now, or to something that happened before. 4. Write one line about it in a notebook, or just hold it in mind until evening.
