When sattva grows, the strength of the gods grows. When rajas grows, the strength of the asuras grows. When tamas grows, Uddhava, the strength of the rakshasas grows. Know waking to come from sattva. Say that dreaming comes from rajas. Deep sleep belongs to tamas in a living being. The fourth runs through all three.

Krishna gives Uddhava two ways to see the gunas at work. The first is in beings. Gods, asuras and rakshasas are three kinds of powerful beings. Where sattva rises, the gods grow strong. Where rajas rises, the asuras do. Where tamas rises, the rakshasas do. Each kind thrives on its own guna, the way a plant thrives in its own soil. The second is inside every person, and it is the nearer one. Krishna maps the gunas onto the three states everyone passes through daily. Waking (jagarana) is clear, so it goes with sattva. Dreaming (svapna) is restless, the mind throwing up images and chasing them, so it goes with rajas. Deep sleep (prasvapa) is dull and blank, so it goes with tamas. Then comes the turn. The fourth, turiya, is not a fourth state beside the others. It runs through all three. The commentators take it as the pure witnessing awareness that is present in waking, dream and sleep alike, and that none of the gunas make. This is taught here because Krishna is preparing Uddhava to go beyond the gunas. The gunas can be watched in the day's own rhythm. Whatever is watched cannot be the one who watches. The teaching asks Uddhava to notice that something stays constant while the three states come and go.

A white screen in a dark hall shows a bright street scene, then a crowded, flickering one, then goes dim and nearly black. Through all of it the screen is the same cloth, holding each picture without becoming it. The three pictures are the three states. The cloth is the fourth.

1. Tonight, just before you fall asleep, spend one minute noticing how clear or dull your mind is. 2. Tomorrow, on waking, stay still for a few breaths before reaching for your phone. Notice that you are already aware, and that you remember having been asleep. 3. Once at midday, ask whether your mind at that moment is clear, restless or heavy. Name it, and go on with the day.

A grandfather dozes in his chair on a warm afternoon. The doorbell rings. He startles awake and cannot tell whether the ringing was in a dream or in the hall. Then he says, "I was asleep," and he knows it was he who slept. The teaching starts from that last sentence. Krishna sets the three states side by side: clear waking, restless dream, blank sleep. He then points to what reports all three afterward and says that it runs through them. The grandfather does not have to solve anything. He only has to see that the one who says "I" in the morning is the one who was there in the chair. Ordinary experience agrees with the pairings. A tired mind is dull and heavy food makes it more so, while an anxious mind runs on and fills sleep with dreams. Today's sleep medicine does distinguish deep sleep from dreaming sleep, and each does a different work for the body and mind. It has no word for a witness that runs through them. That is the text's own teaching. The teaching does not cure bad sleep. Long-lasting sleeplessness or heavy daytime drowsiness is a matter for a doctor.
