By sattva, people of the brahmin kind go higher and higher. By tamas they go down and down, head first. By rajas they stay in between, moving about. Those dissolved in sattva reach heaven. Those dissolved in rajas reach the world of men. Those dissolved in tamas go to hell. But those beyond the gunas come to Me alone.

Krishna names where each guna leads when life ends. Two words matter. Sattva is clarity and lightness; tamas is dullness and heaviness; rajas is restless drive. Nirguna means without the gunas, beyond all three: nir is without, guna is strand or quality. Krishna says that sattva carries people upward, step after step. Tamas pulls them down, head first, like a fall. Rajas keeps them in the middle, always moving and never rising or sinking far. Then he says what happens at death. One who dies absorbed in sattva goes to heaven. One absorbed in rajas is born again among humans. One absorbed in tamas goes to hell. The last line breaks the pattern: those who are nirguna come to Krishna himself. Sridhara Svami reads the first line as describing the course of those who live by one guna, and the second as the world reached at death. This is the end of Krishna's long account of the gunas. He has shown how to tell them apart, in food, work and place. Now he shows where they lead, and that all three, even sattva, still end in a world that is left again. Only the one beyond them arrives at Krishna. It asks the listener to see sattva as a ladder to climb and also a place to step off.

Picture three rooms in a house: a cellar, a ground-floor hall full of people coming and going, and an upper room with open windows. Each is a place you can live in. The front door, opening outside the house altogether, is the one beyond the gunas, where Krishna waits.

1. Tonight, before sleep, recall one choice from today that came from heaviness, one from restlessness, one from clarity. 2. Name each one quietly: tamas, rajas, sattva. Take two minutes. 3. Tomorrow, pick one small act, like a walk or an early meal, that leans toward clarity. 4. At day's end, offer that act to Krishna in a single sentence, without counting what it earned you.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at midnight while his father is in surgery. He keeps checking his phone, then snaps at a nurse, then stops and sits very still. The verse offers him a way to read his own night. The snapping is restlessness. The numb staring is heaviness. The calm that comes when he breathes slowly and stops demanding answers is clarity. Each state has a direction, and he can notice which one he is walking in. Ordinary experience confirms that the way we live a day tends to carry into the next. The verse speaks of what follows death, heaven, rebirth among humans, and hell, as the text's own teaching, and it can be taken as the tradition's word. It also says that even clarity is not the end, and that the one beyond all three reaches Krishna. It does not promise that the father will recover, that the fear will lift, or that calm replaces medical care. It gives the man a way to see where his own mind is leaning tonight.
