Meaning · English
A home in the forest is sattvic. A home in the village is called rajasic. A gambling hall is tamasic. My own dwelling is beyond the gunas. The doer free of attachment is sattvic. The doer blind with passion is rajasic. The doer who has lost his memory is tamasic. The doer who takes refuge in Me is beyond the gunas.
Krishna gives two lists, one for places and one for the person who acts. Two words carry the second list. Asangi means unattached: sanga is clinging, and a-sangi is one who works without clinging to the result. Smriti-vibhrashta means fallen from memory: smriti is remembering, vibhrashta is slipped away. Krishna says a forest dwelling belongs to sattva, a village to rajas, and a gambling hall to tamas. His own dwelling stands outside all three. Sridhara Svami reads the dwelling that is Krishna's as any place where Krishna is kept in mind, so the building matters less than what is held there. Then comes the doer. One who acts without clinging is sattvic. One who acts blinded by craving, raga, is rajasic. One who has forgotten what he is doing and why is tamasic. The one who has made Krishna his shelter is past the gunas. Uddhava has been asking how to tell which guna is at work. Krishna answers with things he can see: where a person sits and how he acts. The listener is asked to notice which of these describes his own days.
Three people carry the same lamp across a dark yard. One walks steadily, watching the path. One runs, eyes fixed on the door he wants. One has forgotten why he picked it up and wanders. The steady walker is sattva, the runner rajas, the wanderer tamas.
1. Tonight, pick one task you did today and ask: was I attached to how it turned out, hungry for it, or half-forgetting why I started? 2. Name it in one word: steady, driven, or lost. 3. Notice which room or place in your home you slip into when you feel lost. Spend ten minutes tomorrow in a quieter spot and see how the same task goes.
A shopkeeper stands at the shutter the morning the rent is due. He checks the till three times, snaps at his helper, and cannot remember whether he ordered the rice. The verse names what is happening: craving for the result has made him blind, and the memory of his task has slipped. Step by step, it would change little outside him. He would first notice the grip, the raga, as a grip. Then he would do the next small task, counting stock, without asking it to settle the rent. Ordinary experience confirms that worry crowds out memory and that busy, noisy places make it worse. The verse does not promise the rent will be paid, or that the fear will vanish. It names the state he is in and the kind of working that does not depend on the outcome. For Krishna, taking shelter in Him is the way out of all three states, and that is the text's teaching, not a measurable claim.
