Dattatreya Explains Creation to Parasurama

The story · English

Dattatreya told Parasurama how a sage's son spoke to King Mahasena and asked him to look at his own inner state, the way a mind builds a kingdom out of daydream. That dream takes many strange shapes, and yet it is only awareness. In creation or in dissolution, this awareness stays free of doubt and division, as a mirror stays the same whether a reflection is there or not. Its nature is one. But because it is free, it can show a world within itself, the way a mirror shows the sky as if it lay outside. This, said the sage's son, is the first creation. It is called ignorance, or darkness: the whole appearing only as a part, and shown as something outside.

When the sense of a full and perfect I is cut off, a sense of no-I arises. This is called the unmanifest, and also the power of inertness. The awareness that shows itself as cut off, as an outer self, is named Shiva-tattva, and its shining is Shakti. The great emptiness imagined as outside, once the I-feeling is veiled, is called Sadashiva. When inertness leads, the same is called Ishvara. Seeing these two together, as both different and not different, is called pure knowledge. So far everything is pure, Dattatreya said, because the power of difference has not yet grown, and oneness still shows through.

Then, from the fullness of its freedom, awareness let the thought of difference grow. The inert power became the thing that holds qualities, and awareness took the part of the quality held. That inert power is called maya, the sense of separateness, born from a crowd of difference-thoughts. Awareness, wrapped in them, contracts and is covered by five sheaths, and so becomes the person. The sheaths are these: limited doing, limited knowing, desire, time, and necessity. Desire is craving and boundedness, time is the span of a life, and necessity is dependence. A person is one who carries all five.

Resting on awareness, a heap of the countless old impressions left by the deeds of people stands as nature, called prakriti. Since actions bear three kinds of fruit, it has three forms, and its changing states are called the mind, chitta. In deep sleep it is nature; at the end of sleep it is mind, awareness together with the heap of impressions. Among different persons the mind takes many forms. In sleep all beings share one, and on waking it becomes mind again. By its work it is called the inner instrument, in three forms: ego, intellect and thinking mind. Then come the five senses of knowing, the five of acting, and the elements, from sound and sky onward, gross and subtle.

So the supreme awareness, witness of all, plays, showing an outer world and moving through creation and the rest. By the first power, Shri Tripura, Brahma, the golden-wombed, was inspired, and the world rose from his imagining. In it, the awareness that shines as you and I is the one supreme power, with no real difference. Difference shows only through a limiting condition, which is Brahma's imagining; when that is withdrawn, difference no longer appears. The king's own power of imagining, the sage's son said, is covered by maya. When the covering goes, that power will be his. Place and time appear just as they are imagined, long or short, fine or vast.

The sage's son gave examples. He had imagined one day, while Brahma's imagining of it came to twelve billion. So the long and the quick are only how it appears. The mountain Brahma made was a quarter league wide, yet he imagined it endless, and so it was. Both are true, and both untrue. The king could do the same: picture a small land and a short time, then picture it again as endless miles and countless ages, and it would appear so. The world is imagination shown on the blank wall of awareness. So yogis cross long distances in a moment and see them clear, like a fruit in the palm. Knowing this, he told the king to drop his confusion and become free like him. Hearing the sage's son, the great sage Mahasena let go of all error, practiced absorption, gained freedom, played long, and at last, his body-image gone, entered the sky of awareness and reached the highest peace. The world shows as true because it is imagined as true. Reflect on this, Parasurama, and confusion in the mind will quiet through inquiry.
