Names That Leave No Stain

Rama Raksha Stotram 12

Meaning · English

Whoever remembers him as Rama, as Ramabhadra, or as Ramachandra is not stained by wrongdoing, and finds both the good things of this life and release.

Rama goes by three names here. Rama is the plain one. Ramabhadra adds a sense of the good and kindly Rama. Ramachandra likens him to the moon. The small word 'or' matters: any one of them is enough. Remembering means calling him to mind by name, nothing more elaborate. A person who does that is not stained by wrongdoing; it does not cling. Then come two gifts usually set against each other: the good things of this life, and release from it. Both are promised together.

A non-stick pan after frying an egg: tip it and the egg slides off, leaving the surface clean. The pan still cooks every day; it simply does not hold what passes over it. The person who keeps Rama's name is like that coating, still acting in the world, but wrongdoing does not stay on them.
