Worn at the Throat

Rama Raksha Stotram 13

Meaning · English

Whoever wears this hymn at the throat, guarded by Rama's name, the one chant that wins the whole world, holds every accomplishment in the palm of the hand.

Rama's name is called the one chant that wins the whole world, a single word doing the work of many. This hymn is sealed with that name, and the verse speaks of the person who keeps it at the throat. That can mean wearing it written down, like an amulet, or keeping it in the voice. For that person, every accomplishment is said to sit in the hand, already within reach rather than somewhere far ahead. The promise is the hymn's own.

A child walks home from school with the house key on a string round the neck. There is no knocking and no waiting on the step. The door opens when the child arrives. Keeping the name at the throat works that way in the hymn: what a person would otherwise wait for is carried along, ready.
