Written Down at Dawn
Rama Raksha Stotram 15
Meaning · English
As Hara taught this Rama Raksha to him in a dream, so Budha Kaushika, waking at dawn, wrote it down.
Hara is another name for Shiva. In a dream, Shiva taught this protective hymn, the Rama Raksha, to a sage called Budha Kaushika. The sentence rests on a matched pair, 'just as' and 'so', and with it the sage claims no invention. When he woke at dawn, he wrote the hymn exactly as it had been given to him. The hymn is naming its own origin: who taught it, who received it, and when it first reached the page.
Picture someone who wakes from a vivid dream and reaches for the notepad on the bedside table. They write fast before the words slip away, and they change nothing. The pencil marks are theirs; what the marks record is not. Budha Kaushika's dawn writing is that notepad: his hand, Shiva's words, set down the morning he woke.
