Tender Yet Mighty

Rama Raksha Stotram 17

Meaning · English

Young, full of beauty, delicate yet very strong, their eyes wide as white lotuses, the two are dressed in bark cloth and black deerskin.

Every word describes two people at once, though their names have not come yet. They are young and good to look at. They are delicate, almost soft, and at the same time very strong. Their eyes are long and wide like the white lotus. Their clothes are bark cloth and the skin of a black antelope, which is what forest hermits wore. So the picture holds two things together: gentleness and strength, princely looks and a hermit's dress.

Bamboo scaffolding on a building site: thin green poles, smooth to the touch, lashed together and holding up workers and bricks several floors high. Nobody looking at one pole would guess what it bears. That is the pairing the verse makes: the two look young and delicate, and those same bodies hold great strength.
