Princes Living on Roots
Rama Raksha Stotram 18
Meaning · English
Living on fruit and roots, self-restrained, practicing austerity, keeping the vow of celibacy: these two sons of Dasharatha, the brothers Rama and Lakshmana.
Four descriptions show how the two brothers live. They eat fruit and roots, food picked by hand rather than cooked in a palace kitchen. They are restrained, keeping their senses in check. They are ascetics, people who take on hardship on purpose. And they keep the discipline of celibate students. Then the line names them: these are the sons of Dasharatha, a king. Royal birth and a hermit's life sit side by side, and the two are named together as brothers, Rama and Lakshmana.
Picture two sons of a wealthy family spending a season at a remote work camp. They sleep on thin mats and eat bread and whatever fruit is around. Their hands are rough now, yet anyone watching can tell where they were raised. That is the pairing here: princes by birth, living by a hermit's plain habits.
