आत्तसज्जधनुषाविषुस्पृशावक्षयाशुगनिषङ्गसङ्गिनौ । रक्षणाय मम रामलक्ष्मणावग्रतः पथि सदैव गच्छताम्

Meaning · English

With bows strung and ready, fingers on their arrows, and quivers that never run empty, may Rama and Lakshmana always walk ahead of me on the road as my guard.

The picture is of two brothers already armed for the road. Their bows are strung, not wrapped up for travel. Their hands rest on the arrows, so nothing has to be fetched when trouble comes. The quivers on their backs never run empty, however many arrows leave them. The request is about where they walk: in front, on the path, at every step, always. The one praying asks to be kept safe by going behind them, so they meet whatever comes first.

A small child crossing a busy street walks a step behind a parent whose arm is already out, checking the cars before the child's foot leaves the curb. The child is not watching the traffic at all. That is the place being asked for: just behind Rama and Lakshmana, whose readiness reaches the road first.

धनुष पर डोरी चढ़ाए, बाणों पर उँगलियाँ रखे और कभी खाली न होने वाले तरकश लिए, राम और लक्ष्मण सदा मार्ग में मेरे आगे-आगे चलकर मेरी रक्षा करें।

यह चित्र उन दो भाइयों का है जो मार्ग के लिए पहले से ही शस्त्र धारण किए हुए हैं। उनके धनुषों पर डोरी चढ़ी है, वे यात्रा के लिए लपेटकर नहीं रखे गए। उनके हाथ बाणों पर टिके हैं, इसलिए संकट आने पर कुछ भी लाने नहीं जाना पड़ता। उनकी पीठ पर बँधे तरकश कभी खाली नहीं होते, चाहे उनसे कितने भी बाण निकलें। प्रार्थना इस बारे में है कि वे कहाँ चलें: आगे, मार्ग पर, हर कदम पर, सदा। प्रार्थना करने वाला उनके पीछे चलकर सुरक्षित रहना माँगता है, ताकि जो भी सामने आए, उसका सामना पहले वे करें।

भीड़-भरी सड़क पार करता एक छोटा बच्चा माता या पिता से एक कदम पीछे चलता है, जिनका हाथ पहले से आगे फैला होता है और जो बच्चे का पैर फुटपाथ से उतरने से पहले ही गाड़ियों को देख लेते हैं। बच्चा गाड़ियों की ओर देखता तक नहीं। यही वह स्थान है जो माँगा जा रहा है: राम और लक्ष्मण के ठीक पीछे, जिनकी तत्परता मार्ग पर पहले पहुँचती है।
