Rama Armed for the Road

Rama Raksha Stotram 21

Meaning · English

Girded, armored, sword in hand, bearing bow and arrows, young, walking on his way, the one our hearts long for: may Rama, with Lakshmana, protect us.

This is Rama ready for the road. He is girded, his clothes tied tight for travel. He wears armor. He carries a sword, and a bow with arrows. He is young. He is walking, already on his way. He is also what we long for, the wish our hearts keep coming back to. Lakshmana walks with him. The prayer is simple: may this Rama, armed and moving, guard us.

Think of an older brother walking a small child home after dark. His coat is buttoned, a torch is in his hand, and he stays a step ahead on the path. The child is not afraid of the road because of who is on it first. Rama is pictured the same way: dressed and armed for travel, walking in front, with Lakshmana beside him.
