रामो दाशरथिः शूरो लक्ष्मणानुचरो बली । काकुत्स्थः पुरुषः पूर्णः कौसल्येयो रघूत्तमः

Meaning · English

Rama, son of Dasharatha, the brave one, mighty, with Lakshmana following him; descendant of Kakutstha, the complete person, Kausalya's son, best of the Raghus.

Nothing happens here. Rama is simply called by name after name. Each name places him: his father Dasharatha, his mother Kausalya, his ancestor Kakutstha, his clan the Raghus. Two names speak of strength: brave and mighty. One names Lakshmana, the brother who walks behind him. One calls him complete, a person lacking nothing. Taken together, the list draws a whole man, rooted in family and line, with strength in him and a companion at his side.

Picture an envelope addressed with care: a name, then the house, the street, the town, the country. Each line narrows the search until the letter can reach only one door. The string of names works the same way. Father, mother, ancestor, clan and brother each narrow the call, until it can land on no one but Rama.

दशरथ के पुत्र राम, वीर, बलवान, जिनके पीछे लक्ष्मण चलते हैं; ककुत्स्थ के वंशज, पूर्ण पुरुष, कौसल्या के पुत्र, रघुकुल में श्रेष्ठ।

यहाँ कुछ घटित नहीं होता। राम को बस एक के बाद एक नाम से पुकारा जाता है। हर नाम उनका स्थान बताता है: उनके पिता दशरथ, उनकी माता कौसल्या, उनके पूर्वज ककुत्स्थ, उनका कुल रघु। दो नाम बल की बात करते हैं: वीर और बलवान। एक नाम लक्ष्मण का है, वह भाई जो उनके पीछे चलता है। एक नाम उन्हें पूर्ण कहता है, ऐसा पुरुष जिसमें कोई कमी नहीं। सब मिलाकर यह सूची एक संपूर्ण मनुष्य का चित्र बनाती है, जिसकी जड़ें परिवार और वंश में हैं, जिसमें बल है और जिसके संग एक साथी है।

एक लिफ़ाफ़े की कल्पना कीजिए, जिस पर बड़े ध्यान से पता लिखा गया है: एक नाम, फिर घर, गली, नगर, देश। हर पंक्ति खोज का घेरा छोटा करती जाती है, यहाँ तक कि पत्र केवल एक ही द्वार तक पहुँच सकता है। नामों की यह लड़ी भी इसी तरह काम करती है। पिता, माता, पूर्वज, कुल और भाई, हर एक पुकार का घेरा छोटा करता है, यहाँ तक कि वह राम के सिवा किसी और पर नहीं ठहर सकती।
