वेदान्तवेद्यो यज्ञेशः पुराणपुरुषोत्तमः । जानकीवल्लभः श्रीमानप्रमेयपराक्रमः
Meaning · English
He is the one the deepest scriptures lead to, lord of every sacrifice, the highest person in the ancient tales, Sita's beloved, full of grace, his strength beyond measure.
The names move from vast to close. First, he is what the deepest scriptures are finally about, the thing all that teaching is trying to know. Then he is the lord every sacrifice is offered to. The old story-books, crowded with heroes, name him the highest of them. Then the scale turns small and personal: he is the one Sita loves. Two words close the line. He carries a glow of good fortune, and his courage has no measure. One person holds all of it.
On a surgeon's office wall hang framed degrees, awards and a brass plaque with his title. On the desk below sits one small photo of his wife. Visitors notice both. The wall is like the grand names: the goal of scripture, the lord of sacrifice. The photo is Sita's beloved. Neither makes the other smaller.

वे वही हैं जिन तक सबसे गहरे शास्त्र ले जाते हैं, हर यज्ञ के स्वामी, पुरानी कथाओं के सबसे ऊँचे पुरुष, सीता के प्रिय, कृपा से भरे, जिनका बल अपार है।
ये नाम विशाल से निकट की ओर बढ़ते हैं। पहले, वे वही हैं जिनके बारे में सबसे गहरे शास्त्र अंत में बात करते हैं, वही जिसे जानने का प्रयास वह सारी शिक्षा करती है। फिर वे वह स्वामी हैं जिन्हें हर यज्ञ अर्पित होता है। वीरों से भरी पुरानी कथाएँ उन्हें उन सबमें सबसे ऊँचा बताती हैं। फिर बात छोटी और निजी हो जाती है: वे वही हैं जिनसे सीता प्रेम करती हैं। दो शब्द पंक्ति को पूरा करते हैं। उनमें सौभाग्य की आभा है, और उनके साहस की कोई सीमा नहीं। एक ही व्यक्ति में यह सब समाया है।
एक शल्य चिकित्सक के कमरे की दीवार पर मढ़ी हुई उपाधियाँ, पुरस्कार और उसके पद वाली पीतल की एक पट्टिका टँगी है। नीचे मेज़ पर उसकी पत्नी का एक छोटा-सा चित्र रखा है। आने वाले दोनों को देखते हैं। दीवार उन भव्य नामों जैसी है: शास्त्रों का लक्ष्य, यज्ञ के स्वामी। चित्र है सीता के प्रिय। कोई भी दूसरे को छोटा नहीं करता।
