Nature and the person: this is only a way of dividing things, best of men. This created world is a changed and changing one, made of the gunas mixing and working on one another. My Maya, made of the gunas, in many ways brings about, through the gunas, the ideas of difference. What has changed is threefold: one part belongs to the self, one to the gods, and another to the elements.
Krishna begins with a word that carries the whole verse: vikalpa. It comes from kalp, to arrange or imagine, and means a division made in thought. Krishna tells Uddhava that the pairing of nature and person is a vikalpa. It is a useful way of sorting what is found, but it is a sorting, and Krishna does not present it as two separate things set side by side. Guna means a strand, a quality that nature is woven from. Krishna says the world as we meet it is vaikarika, from vikara, a change or modification. It is nature already altered, its strands mixing and pressing on one another. Maya, from ma, to measure out, is Krishna's own power, and he calls it "my Maya". It works through the gunas and gives rise to many kinds of ideas of difference. The last line gives the changed world three parts. They are the self-related, the god-related and the element-related. The commentators usually read these as an organ such as the eye, the power that presides over it, and the thing it sees. This answers Uddhava's trouble in 11.22.26. He sees nature and person each found within the other and cannot say where one ends. Krishna answers that the line between them is drawn by Maya and was never one of the world's own seams. He asks Uddhava to hold the counting loosely.
A border on a map is drawn in ink, yet the ground beneath it is one stretch of field and road. Travellers can use the line, argue over it and even die for it, but the soil does not change at it. The line is the division of nature and person, and the unbroken ground is what Krishna's Maya is working on.
1. Choose one ordinary sight today, such as a cup of tea, and spend two minutes with it. 2. Name its three parts: your eye that sees it, the light that lets you see, and the cup itself. 3. Then notice that all three arrived together, in one act of seeing, and that you only separated them afterwards. 4. The next time you hear yourself say "mine" or "theirs", "mind" or "body", pause for one breath and remember that this is a sorting, a way of dividing.
A woman sits in a clinic waiting room, her chest tight for three days. A relative has told her it is all in her head, and she half believes it and feels ashamed. Then she notices that the tightness got worse after the quarrel at home, and that her sleep has been poor too. Krishna's teaching that the division is a vikalpa, a sorting made in thought, helps her here. She stops asking whether the trouble is of the body or of the mind, as though only one could be true. She describes it whole to the doctor: the tightness, the quarrel, the bad nights. A good family doctor would ask for exactly that, since mind and body are discussed separately but are not two patients. Ordinary experience confirms the link. A bad night makes the temper shorter and a worry makes the stomach tight. The teaching does not say the tightness is imaginary. It does not replace an examination, and it does not lift the fear of what the doctor may say. It only loosens the habit of blaming one side.
