Quarrels That Never End

Bhagavata Purana 11.22.34

Meaning · English

A dispute born of not knowing the Self fixes on differences of object: it is, it is not. Though it has no real purpose, it does not cease for people whose minds have turned away from me, from their own world.

Three words carry the verse. Vivada is debate or quarrel, from vi, apart, and vad, to speak: speech that pulls two ways. Aparijnana is not-fully-knowing, and here it is not knowing the Self (atma). Parvritta-dhi is a mind turned away, from pari-vrit, to turn round. Krishna says the endless quarrel comes from that turning. People who do not know the Self argue over things. One says a thing is, another says it is not, and each clings to a separate object. Krishna calls the quarrel vyartha, without real use, yet it does not stop, because those whose minds face away from him, and so from their own home (svaloka), have nothing to settle it. This sits in his teaching on why the schools count the elements differently. He has just shown that the counts vary, and now he names what sets the schools fighting: minds that look outward at objects and lose the ground they all stand on. Sridhara Svami reads the verse as explaining why such disputes persist even when they are useless. It asks the listener to notice when a dispute is about the thing and when it is about being turned away from the Self.

Two travellers stand at a crossroads at dusk, each sure the other's signpost is wrong, shouting over which road is real. Neither has looked up at the hill where both are headed. The shouting is the quarrel over objects; the hill is the Self they have turned from.

1. Today, when you notice yourself arguing a point, with someone or in your own head, stop for one breath before the next sentence. 2. Ask: is this settling anything, or only repeating? 3. If it is only repeating, say nothing more for five minutes and watch what the urge to win does. 4. In the evening, write down one argument and what you were really protecting.

A woman sits at the dinner table while her two brothers argue again over whether their late father meant the house to go to one of them. The same lines come round for the third time. She notices the argument has stopped being about the house. Each is defending being right, and each has stopped looking at what grief the house stands for. Seen through this verse, she could stop trying to rule on who is correct and name the one thing under the noise: that all three miss him. She might say that aloud, once, quietly. The quarrel may then lose some of its fuel, since it was never really serving the house. Ordinary experience confirms that tired and frightened people argue longest over small facts. The verse does not promise that the brothers will agree, that the house will be divided fairly, or that grief will lift. Some disputes need a lawyer or a mediator, and seeking one is sensible. The text's own claim is narrower: it says endless debate comes from turning away from the Self.
