Speaking Ill of Others

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 45.6

Meaning · English

Whether what is said is true or false, it is not praiseworthy for a Brahmana to speak badly of other people. Those who do so make hell their dwelling.

The verse turns on one phrase: speaking ill of others. The old text calls this a fault whether the charge is true or false. That is the surprise. Most people think blame is acceptable if it is accurate. Sanatsujata says the accuracy does not rescue the speaker. The word for the one addressed is Brahmana, here a person who holds Brahman, the highest reality, as the one thing worth reaching. Such a person is judged by a stricter measure, and running others down does not fit it. The last clause is the warning: those who do it have hell as their abode. Abode means a place one lives, not a place one visits. The point is that it becomes a habit and a home. Nilakantha's commentary treats this as one of the faults tied to mada, the intoxication of pride, which the next verses go on to count. Dhritarashtra lies awake with fear and unanswered questions. Sanatsujata is showing him what clouds the mind of a person who wants to know. A mind busy judging others has no room left to look at itself, and the sage says the cost is a bitter way of living.

A cook who keeps tasting other people's soup and finding it thin never notices his own pot scorching on the fire. The tongue stays busy with the neighbor's kitchen, and the one thing that needed attention burns. Fault-finding is that tasting.

1. Pick one ordinary conversation today, at work, at home or on the phone, and listen for the moment you are about to say something unkind about someone absent. 2. Notice whether it is true or false. Then leave it unsaid anyway, and see what you talk about instead. 3. Tonight, sit for two minutes and recall one such moment. Notice what was happening in you just before the words rose.
