First Signs of Friendship

Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 45.9

Meaning · English

Friendship is known by six signs. The first is that a friend is glad when his friend prospers. The second is that he is troubled when his friend meets misfortune.

Sanatsujata tells Dhritarashtra that friendship can be recognised by six signs. This first part names two of them. The key word is mitra, friend. Tradition links it to a root meaning to bind or to be fond, so a mitra is someone attached to you. The other two words are prosperity and adversity, which are simply good fortune and trouble, the two weathers of any life. The first sign is that a friend is glad when his friend does well. The second is that he is troubled when his friend runs into misfortune. Taken together, the friend's feelings rise and fall with yours, whichever way your fortune turns. Sanatsujata does not measure friendship by affection spoken aloud or by years of acquaintance. He measures it by how a person feels when your luck changes. His listener is a king who cannot sleep and is searching for what can be trusted. Just before this, Sanatsujata warned him about mada, the intoxicating pride that carries eighteen faults. Pride makes it hard to feel another person's rise or fall as one's own. A friend, as the text describes him, is the opposite: someone whose heart is not shut off from yours.

Two strings on an instrument are tuned alike. Pluck one and the other hums by itself, without being touched. A true friend is like the second string. Your good fortune or your trouble sets something moving in him, whether the note is bright or low.

1. Today, when someone you know shares good news, notice your first inner reaction before you reply. Just notice it. 2. Say one sincere sentence of gladness to that person. 3. This week, think of one friend who is having a hard time. Spend five minutes writing to them or calling, and ask how they are. 4. In the evening, recall which of the two came more easily to you, gladness or concern.
