Bali Asks His Father's Question

Yoga Vasishtha 5.22

The story · English

Vasishtha turned to Rama and told him to follow the example of King Bali, who found wisdom by looking within. Rama said he was already at rest, his mind clear as an autumn sky after the rains, but he was never full of these teachings. How, he asked, did Bali come to know the truth? Vasishtha agreed to tell it. Far below this earth lies the infernal region, Patala. Pale water-goddesses lived there, and serpents with a thousand heads, and demons striding about as if the worlds were balls to toss and swallow. Elephants held up the earth on their tusks. Deep down lay mines of gems and metals, and corners made holy by Kapila and by Siva.

Bali, son of Virochana, was king of the demons there. He made the gods and serpents serve him like vassals. Even Airavata, the king of elephants, paled at the sound of his name. His anger dried the seven oceans, his frown bowed the mountains, and the smoke of his sacrifices brought rain. He ruled for countless ages and watched generations of gods, demons and men rise and pass like whirlpools in a river. Then a distaste came over him. He had tasted every pleasure until he was sick of it, and uneasiness crept in beneath the delights. He went up to the far polar mountain, Meru, sat on the balcony of a gleaming peak, and began to think about the whole business of living.

How long, he wondered, must I keep ruling, and how long must I wander through the three worlds in one life after another? What good is a throne no one can rival, if every pleasure fades the moment after I taste it? The same days and nights come round, the same embraces, the same meals. That is fine for playing boys, but shameful for a grown mind. It is like chewing food that has already been chewed. Human actions, he said, are like waves, rising only to fall and rise again. Is there any deed that, once done, never needs doing again? He could find none. Actions bring only things to enjoy, nothing that lasts. Then he fell into deep meditation.

When he came back to himself, he said, I remember something now, something I heard from my father. Long ago I had asked Virochana: what is the final state, where pain and pleasure end, where there is no more wandering from life to life? What is the best of all gains, whose sight outshines everything else? All the world's luxuries mislead the mind, even a wise one. Father, show me the state that does not perish. Virochana was sitting in the shade of the heavenly kalpa tree, its pale flowers scattered all around. In his gentle voice he answered. There is a country, my son, somewhere in the universe, wide enough to hold thousands of worlds.

Yet that country has no oceans, no mountains, no land or sky, no suns or moons, no gods or demons. No water, fire or air, no above or below, no light or shadow. It has one sovereign, full of ineffable light, who made and fills everything and yet stays perfectly still. He appointed a minister, clever and tireless, who does the impossible and prevents every mishap. The minister neither eats nor drinks nor knows anything except his master's orders, and is otherwise as inert as stone. The king rests in seclusion while the minister runs everything. Bali asked who this king and minister were, and why even the demons could not beat him. Virochana said the minister cannot be beaten by any army of giants, nor by Indra, Kubera or Yama. Weapons shatter on him like blows against rock.

He defeated our own forefathers, the Hiranyas, said Virochana, before Vishnu destroyed them. He is behind Kama, the flower-armed god of love, and behind every war between gods and demons. Left alone, he is either dull as a rock or restless as wind, and only his silent lord can manage him. You are truly brave, my son, if you can conquer this greatest of giants. Master him and you master the world. Fail, and you rule nothing, even with a kingdom at your feet. Bali asked how such a being could be beaten. Virochana said it is done by the right means, as a snake's poison is stopped in time by the right mantra. The mind, trained like a boy in the way he should go, leads a man to the presence of the king.

When the king appears, the minister fades from view, and when the minister is set aside, the king stands in plain sight. So practice both together: step by step draw near the king, and step by step slight the minister's authority. This country, Virochana explained, is liberation, moksha, the end of all pain. The king is the soul, and the minister is the mind that the soul appointed. Whatever the mind contains it shows outwardly, as a lump of clay holds the shape of the pot. Bali asked for the means. Virochana said: stop relying on outward things and stop wanting possessions. It is easy with habit and hard without, like watering a plant's roots day after day until it is a tree. No harvest comes from an unsown field.

What people call destiny, Virochana went on, has no shape of its own. It is just whatever happens, a word we use to quiet our joy and grief. Effort overturns it, as light dispels a mirage. Whatever the mind decides becomes the destiny. So rely on the spirit and your own effort, not on fate. Bali asked how indifference takes root. Virochana said it grows from seeing the inner Spirit, as grapes come from vines, and the lotus opens at the sun's glance. Sharpen your mind on right reasoning. Learn from books and from a teacher, and keep company with the wise, for clean cloth takes dye best. Sight of the Spirit and loss of craving feed each other, like wick and oil in a lamp. First earn your wealth honestly, then spend it on the wise, then give up the world, then reason your way to spiritual knowledge. Then you will be as free as Siva.

Bali said: that is what my father taught me, and I remember it now. I feel my distaste for pleasure, and a cool peace within me, like a full moon rising inside. I am tired of my possessions and tired of piling up wealth for desires that never end. I have seen all there is to see, enjoyed without limit, and conquered every being, yet what have I gained? Everything is a repeat of what I had before, and nothing is new. The finest things in heaven, earth and Patala, the women and jewels, are all worn away by time. I fought the gods for trifles, and I regret it. But regret is useless. The present is mine to use.

The world, Bali said, is a phantom made by the brain, so what harm is there in giving it up for good? I spent so much of my life chasing trifles in a giddy mind, and my restless desires led me into foolish acts. Yet it does no good to drown in sorrow over the past when I can put my effort into the present. Bliss comes from reflecting on the one source of all souls, as the gods got ambrosia from the Milky ocean. I must consult my teacher Sukra, he decided, about the self, the soul and spiritual sight. Sukra is always kind to those he favors. With his advice I may come to see the Supreme Spirit within my own spirit, for the words of the wise are full of meaning and bear the fruit we seek.
