Meaning · English

Keeping Krishna in mind, the wise worshipper honours the fuel sticks, then offers the ghee-soaked oblations. He casts in the two portions of ghee and the two streams, and gives the offering dipped in ghee. With the root mantra he makes the offerings, sixteen in all. Then, by rule and with their own mantras, he makes offerings to Dharma and the others, and last the final offering that makes the rite well offered.

Four words carry the passage. Ajya is ghee, clarified butter, the fuel a sacrificial fire takes most gladly. Aghara is the two thin streams of ghee poured on the flame at the start of the offering. Mulamantra is the root mantra, the basic mantra of the deity being worshipped, from which other mantras grow. Svishtakrit means making the rite well offered, from su, well, and ishta, offered. It is the closing offering. Krishna tells Uddhava that the wise worshipper keeps Krishna in mind from the first moment. He honours the fuel sticks, then offers the ghee-soaked oblations. He pours the two portions and the two streams, then gives the oblation dipped in ghee. With the root mantra he makes the sixteen offerings of worship. He then offers to Dharma and the other attendants, each with its own mantra and according to the rule. The final offering closes the rite. The passage answers Uddhava's question about how to worship Krishna in the fire. The answer is a fixed order, with Krishna held in mind through every step. The commentators work out the exact sequence of portions. The text itself asks only that each act be done in its place, by rule, and with attention.

A host receives an honoured guest in a set order: water for the feet, a seat, a garland, food, a farewell at the door. Each small act says welcome, and none is hurried. The sixteen offerings work the same way, and the fire is the doorway where Krishna is received.

1. This evening, light one small lamp or wick, with a drop of oil or ghee if you have it, and let it settle. 2. Hold Krishna's form in your mind for one minute, however you picture him. 3. Offer one thing in order: a flower, or a pinch of the evening meal, placed before the lamp while you say his name once. 4. Stay quiet for a few breaths, then notice whether your attention rested more on the offering or on your day.

A woman stands at the stove at dusk, stirring dal for her father-in-law, who is unwell. Her mind is already in tomorrow's bills and the call she dreads. Her hands move, but she is not there. The verse offers her a set order to move through. First one thing is done, and then the next. A spoon of ghee goes in, a name is spoken, a small lamp is lit. Each step is small enough to finish, so the mind has something definite to return to each time it wanders. Slow, repeated, familiar movements steady the breathing, and ordinary experience bears that out. In the text's own teaching, the point of the order is Krishna himself, kept in mind through every offering. The verse does not pay the bills or make her father-in-law well. A doctor is still the one to ask about his illness. What it gives is a few minutes in which the day is set down and one thing is offered with care.
