Meaning · English
Having worshipped and bowed, he should set out the offering for the Lord's attendants. He should repeat the root mantra, remembering Brahman, whose very nature is Narayana. Having given water for sipping, he should set aside the remnant for Vishvaksena. Then he should offer a fragrant mouth-freshener, betel leaf and the like.
Three words carry the verse. Bali is a portion set out as an offering, here for the pārṣadas, the attendants: those who sit beside the Lord, his household. Mulamantra is the root mantra, the main one the worshipper has been using through the rite. Uccheshha is the remnant, what is left after the Lord has been offered the meal. Krishna tells Uddhava the order of the closing steps. First comes worship and a bow. Then a share goes to the attendants, so that the household around the Lord is not forgotten. Then the root mantra is repeated, with the mind on Brahman, which the text says is Narayana in its very nature. Water for sipping is offered next. The remnant is then set aside for Vishvaksena, named here as the one who receives it. Last, a fragrant mouth-freshener, such as betel leaf, is offered, as a host would offer after a meal. The teaching is that worship follows the shape of hospitality. A guest is fed, rinsed, perfumed, and his people are looked after too. The mantra in the middle keeps the mind from treating this as mere housekeeping. The commentators read the remnant as something already received from the Lord and passed on. Uddhava is asked to keep the order and the attention together.
After a wedding feast, the host walks out to the cooks, drivers and helpers and makes sure each has been fed and given something sweet to chew. The Lord is the honoured guest, the attendants are the helpers, and the offerings at the end are the host's last courtesies.
1. This evening, light a lamp or set a flower before a picture or a bare shelf, and bow once. 2. Put a small portion of your own meal on a clean plate first, before eating. Pour a little water beside it. 3. Say one name or short phrase you love, slowly, ten times. 4. Give that portion to a bird, a plant's soil, or a neighbour, and notice how it feels to hand it on.
A woman has finished hosting a long family dinner. The table is a mess and she is tired. Before she sits, she fills a plate for the neighbour who helped carry chairs and sets aside a little sweet for the man who delivered the vegetables. The verse speaks to that moment. The close of the rite follows the same order. The guest is served, then the people around him are thought of, then something small and pleasant is offered at the end. Doing it step by step, in the same order each time, gives a tired person a clear finish and keeps the evening from ending in a heap of chores. Ordinary experience confirms that a ritual with a set closing makes a task feel complete. Remembering the helpers also widens attention beyond the self. The text's own claim, that the offering reaches the Lord and his attendants, is its teaching and is not weighed here. The verse does not make the tiredness go, and it does not replace rest or food for the one who cooked.
