Singing along, chanting, dancing, acting out my deeds, telling my stories and listening to them, the worshipper becomes, for a moment, a person of that moment alone. Then, with hymns grand or plain, from the old Puranas or in his own everyday speech, he praises me, says, "Be gracious, Lord," and bows flat like a staff.
A few words carry the teaching. Abhinaya means acting out. The body carries a story across to the watcher, and here it carries Krishna's deeds. Kshanika comes from kshana, a moment. The worshipper becomes a person of the moment, with every other errand set down for a short while. Stuti is praise, from the root stu, to extol, and a stotra is a hymn. Danda-vat means like a staff: the whole length of the body laid on the ground. Krishna tells Uddhava that worship is not only quiet offering. The worshipper sings along, chants, dances, and acts out Krishna's deeds. He tells Krishna's stories and listens to them. For a while nothing else claims him. Then comes praise. It may be in great hymns or plain ones, in verses from the Puranas or in ordinary language. It ends in a short plea, "be gracious," and a full bow. This comes after the fire, the offerings and the mantra. Having given the steps that need training, Krishna now gives what needs none: voice, body and ears. The question it answers is what a person does with whatever he has. The answer is to give all of it, and to let the words be as simple as they are. What it asks of the listener is whole attention, a voice, and a bow at the end.
A child comes home from school and cannot wait. She shouts the news, acts out the playground quarrel with her arms, laughs, repeats the best part, and finally runs into her mother's lap. Telling, acting, listening and the closing embrace stand for the singing, the stories and the bow.
1. Tonight, light one lamp or sit near a window for five minutes. 2. Say aloud one thing Krishna did that you know, in your own words, as you would tell a friend. 3. Hum or sing any line of praise you know, even half-remembered, and say plainly, "Be gracious to me." 4. Finish by bowing, forehead to the floor or just your head and shoulders. Notice whether your mind has settled even slightly.
A woman has been up all night with a feverish child. At dawn the fever has broken, and she stands in the kitchen too tired to think. Her mind runs through tomorrow's bills and the call she forgot to return. She starts humming a hymn her grandmother sang, softly at first, then in words. She tells herself the story that goes with it. When the song ends she presses her palms together and bows her head to the counter. Following the verse step by step, her voice, breath and body are all doing one thing, so for a minute the lists go quiet. The plain words are enough, and the bow ends the minute with a clear sign that it is done. Ordinary experience confirms that singing slows the breath and that a settled body quiets a racing mind. The verse does not promise that the fever stays down, that the bills shrink or that tiredness leaves. A sick child still needs a doctor. What it offers is a way of giving the tired self to Krishna as it is.
