Meaning · English
Placing his head at my feet, his arms clasped together, let him pray: 'Lord, protect me. I have come to you for refuge. I am afraid of this ocean of death, full of its sea-monsters.' Then, with respect, let him lay on his head the remnant I have given. If he wishes to take leave of the one he invited, let the light return into the light.
Three words carry the verse. Prapanna means one who has come for refuge, someone who has stopped managing alone and walks up to a protector. Mrityu means death, and graha, here, means a sea-monster or crocodile, so the fear is of an ocean with creatures in it, not of one quiet moment. Shesha means what remains after the offering: the flower or food that was given to Krishna and is now handed back. Krishna tells Uddhava how the worship closes. The worshipper puts his head at the feet, joins his arms, and says plainly that he is afraid and wants shelter. Then he takes the returned remnant, places it on his head with respect, and, if he chooses to end the worship, sends the invited presence back. The light goes into the light, which the commentators read as the presence in the image returning to the light in the heart. The reason it comes last is that the whole rite has been giving. This is the one moment of asking, and what is asked for is refuge, nothing else. The remnant is Krishna's answer in hand: the worshipper leaves holding something given back. The verse asks that fear be said honestly, and that the leaving be as courteous as the arriving.
A traveller caught on a dark road knocks at a house and says, 'I am lost and cold, may I come in?' He is fed, given a blanket, and when he leaves the host presses a packet of food into his hands. The prayer is the knock, the remnant is the packet, and the leaving is done in thanks.
1. Tonight, after a lamp or a flower offering, bow your head for a moment and say in one plain sentence what you are afraid of. 2. Add, 'Please keep me.' Say it aloud or silently. 3. Touch the flower or a grain of sugar you offered to your forehead, then eat or keep it. 4. Bow once more to take leave, and put the lamp out gently.
A man sits in his parked car outside a hospital, ten minutes before he is called in to hear his mother's test results. His hands are on the wheel. He has been telling himself he is fine. The verse gives him a different first move: lower the head, put the hands together, and say the fear in its true size, without dressing it up. Krishna teaches the worshipper to name death and ask for shelter, not to pretend calm. Then comes a small act with the hands, taking back something that was offered and touching it to the head, and then a clean ending. He gets out of the car having said what was true and having done something with his body, not only his thoughts. Ordinary experience bears out that a fear spoken aloud is often easier to carry than one held rigid. The verse does not promise a good result, does not remove the fear of loss, and does not stand in for the doctor, whose words he still has to go in and hear.
