Dark as Young Grass

Rama Raksha Stotram 25

Meaning · English

Those who praise Rama, dark as a blade of fresh grass, lotus-eyed, dressed in yellow, with his divine names, are not caught in the round of worldly life.

The verse paints Rama in three quick strokes. His skin is the deep green-dark of a new grass blade. His eyes are shaped like lotus petals. His cloth is yellow. Then it makes its claim. People who praise him using his holy names are no longer 'worldly' in the old sense of the word: people who keep circling through birth, death and ordinary striving without end. Praising him by name is what breaks that circling.

A child on a playground roundabout passes the same bench, the same tree, the same gate, again and again, faster each time. Then they put a foot down and step off onto ground that holds still. The spinning is the round of worldly life. Praising Rama by his names is the foot put down.
