रामं लक्ष्मणपूर्वजम् रघुवरं सीतापतिं सुन्दरम् काकुत्स्थं करुणार्णवं गुणनिधिं विप्रप्रियं धार्मिकम् । राजेन्द्रं सत्यसन्धं दशरथतनयं श्यामलं शान्तमूर्तिम् वन्दे लोकाभिरामं रघुकुलतिलकम् राघवं रावणारिम्

Meaning · English

I bow to Rama: Lakshmana's elder brother, best of Raghu's line, Sita's husband, handsome, ocean of compassion, true to his word, Dasharatha's son, dark, calm, Ravana's foe.

The speaker bows to Rama and, instead of telling a story, lists who he is. Some names place him among people: elder brother of Lakshmana, husband of Sita, son of Dasharatha, the finest of Raghu's descendants, descendant of Kakutstha, Raghava, the crest-jewel of Raghu's clan. Others describe his nature: handsome, dark-skinned, calm in form, an ocean of compassion, a store of good qualities, loyal to his promises, dear to the learned, upright. He is king among kings and the one the whole world delights in. The last name, enemy of Ravana, recalls his battle without retelling it.

Picture a framed family photograph hanging in a hallway. It shows one face, yet each person who passes it names him differently: my brother, my husband, my son, the man who kept his word. The verse holds Rama in a single frame the same way, and names him through every relationship and quality gathered around him.

मैं राम को प्रणाम करता हूँ: लक्ष्मण के बड़े भाई, रघुवंश में श्रेष्ठ, सीता के पति, सुंदर, करुणा के सागर, वचन के पक्के, दशरथ के पुत्र, साँवले, शांत, रावण के शत्रु।

वक्ता राम को प्रणाम करता है और कोई कथा सुनाने के बजाय गिनाता है कि वे कौन हैं। कुछ नाम उन्हें लोगों के बीच स्थान देते हैं: लक्ष्मण के बड़े भाई, सीता के पति, दशरथ के पुत्र, रघु के वंशजों में सबसे श्रेष्ठ, ककुत्स्थ के वंशज, राघव, रघुकुल के तिलक। दूसरे नाम उनके स्वभाव का वर्णन करते हैं: सुंदर, साँवले, शांत रूप वाले, करुणा के सागर, गुणों के भंडार, अपने वचनों के प्रति निष्ठावान, विद्वानों के प्रिय, धर्म पर चलने वाले। वे राजाओं के राजा हैं और वही हैं जिनसे सारा संसार आनंदित होता है। अंतिम नाम, रावण के शत्रु, उनके युद्ध की याद दिलाता है पर उसे दोबारा नहीं सुनाता।

गलियारे में टँगी, चौखटे में जड़ी एक पारिवारिक तस्वीर की कल्पना कीजिए। उसमें एक ही चेहरा है, फिर भी उसके सामने से गुज़रने वाला हर व्यक्ति उसे अलग नाम से पुकारता है: मेरा भाई, मेरे पति, मेरा बेटा, वह व्यक्ति जिसने अपना वचन निभाया। यह श्लोक भी राम को उसी तरह एक ही चौखटे में रखता है, और उनके चारों ओर जुड़े हर संबंध और गुण के द्वारा उन्हें नाम देता है।
