Calling Out for Shelter
Rama Raksha Stotram 28
Meaning · English
Rama, Rama, joy of Raghu's line, Rama; Rama, Bharata's elder brother, Rama; Rama, fierce in battle, Rama; Rama, Rama, be my shelter, Rama.
Each line holds one small description, packed inside the name said over and over. Raghunandana is the one who brings gladness to the family of Raghu, his ancestor. Bharatāgraja is the one born before Bharata, his older brother. Raṇakarkaśa is hard and unyielding when a battle comes. The fourth line stops describing and asks: be my refuge. The repeated name is not filler. Saying it again and again is the act of devotion, and the request comes out of it.
Picture a small child in the next room calling 'Mum, Mum, Mum' before saying anything else. The name comes first and keeps coming, and only at the end does the child say what they need. The hymn moves the same way. The name carries most of the line, and the plea for shelter arrives last.
