Four Ways to His Feet
Rama Raksha Stotram 29
श्रीरामचन्द्रचरणौ मनसा स्मरामि श्रीरामचन्द्रचरणौ वचसा गृणामि । श्रीरामचन्द्रचरणौ शिरसा नमामि श्रीरामचन्द्रचरणौ शरणं प्रपद्ये
Meaning · English
With my mind I remember Sri Ramachandra's feet; with my speech I praise them; with my head I bow to them; at those feet I take refuge.
The same phrase, the feet of Sri Ramachandra, opens all four lines. Only the verb and the part of the person change. The mind remembers them. The voice speaks their praise aloud. The head bows to them, which is the body's own gesture. The last line drops any instrument, and the speaker simply goes to those feet for refuge. Thought, word and body are each given over in turn, and then the whole person follows.
Someone is moving house. First they picture the new place while still packing. Then they tell friends the address. Then they carry boxes up the steps. Finally, one night, they sleep there. Remembering, praising and bowing are the picturing, the telling and the carrying. Taking refuge is the night the speaker actually lives at those feet.
