Skill in Action
Bhagavad Gita 2.50
Meaning · English
Endowed with wisdom, a person sheds both good and bad deeds even in this life. Therefore strive for yog. Yog is the art of working skillfully.
Three words carry this. Buddhi is the steady understanding that sees clearly and is not pushed about by wanting. Karma is action, and also the trail an action leaves behind. Kaushala is skill, the knack of a trained hand. Krishna tells Arjuna that a person whose understanding is steady shakes off the pull of both good and bad deeds, and does so in this life, not after death. The reason follows from the verses before it. Deeds bind a person through clinging to what they will bring: praise, reward, safety. Wisdom loosens that clinging, so the deed is done and its grip does not stay. Arjuna wants to escape the battle to keep his hands clean. Krishna answers that the cure is yog, a steady joining of the mind to the Divine, practised inside action. Skill here means acting without being tangled in the result. The listener is asked to strive for that, not to stop acting. Shankara reads the skill as acting with even-mindedness, offering the work to God. Ramanuja reads it as action joined with wisdom, leading toward knowledge of the self. Madhva reads it as acting with right knowledge of God, who gives the results.
Someone carries a brimming cup of tea across a crowded room. Their eyes stay on the cup, not on the guests watching. The cup arrives full because attention sat on the doing. Work done with the mind on the act, and not on the audience or the payment, is the skill the verse names.
1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes, writing a message, or sweeping a floor, and give it ten minutes. 2. Before you begin, name the result you are hoping for, then set it aside for those ten minutes. 3. Whenever your mind runs ahead to praise or blame, notice it and return to the next small movement of your hands. 4. At the end, notice whether the task felt lighter than usual.
A woman runs a small tiffin kitchen. A large order arrives at six in the morning, and she is already replaying yesterday's burnt batch and picturing a bad review. Krishna's teaching, step by step, asks her to see that the replaying and the picturing are clinging to results, not part of the cooking. She turns to the dal in front of her, its salt, its heat, its timing. The shame of yesterday and the fear of tomorrow loosen, because neither is on the stove. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind split between past and future cooks worse than a mind on the pot. The teaching also speaks of shedding the hold of good and bad deeds in this life, and the text offers that as its own teaching about freedom. It does not promise the order will be praised, the loss of the burnt batch will be undone, or the worry will never return. Exhaustion, debt or illness still need practical help.
