Freedom From Rebirth

Bhagavad Gita 2.51

Meaning · English

The wise, steady in equanimity of intellect, give up the fruits born of their actions. Freed from the bondage of birth and death, they reach the state that is free from all suffering.

Three words carry it. Karma-ja means born of action: the results that grow out of what we do. Buddhi-yukta means joined to buddhi, the steady intellect that stays level in gain and loss. Phala is fruit, the outcome we hope for. Krishna tells Arjuna that the wise, whose minds are even, abandon the fruit that action produces. The abandoning is of the clinging to results, not of the work. The reason is bondage. Krishna has just said that those who work for rewards are miserly, and here he shows what the reward-seeking costs: every action done for its fruit ties the doer to another turn of birth and death. Drop the grasping and the tie loosens. The wise are then freed from that bondage and reach a state called anamaya, without illness, without affliction. It asks Arjuna to act, fully and with an even mind, and let the result go. Commentators read the verse with different weight. Shankara takes the freedom as liberation reached through knowledge, with action purifying the mind. Ramanuja reads the even-minded action as a discipline that leads the soul to its release. Madhva reads the state beyond suffering as the soul's attainment of the Lord's own abode.

A farmer sows a field and then cannot sit by it all night, pulling at the shoots to make them rise faster. The ploughing and watering are his; the growing is not. Work done and fruit released is the farmer who goes home to sleep, while the field does what fields do.

1. Pick one task today that matters to you, such as a message, a meal you cook, or a piece of work. 2. Before starting, say quietly what result you hope for, then set it down for the length of the task. 3. While working, notice each time your mind runs ahead to praise or outcome, and bring it back to the next small step. 4. When done, notice for one minute how your body feels, whatever the result turns out to be.

A man stands outside a hospital room while his mother's scan results are read. For the past week he has driven her to every appointment, cooked soft food, and kept the pill schedule. Now his mind swings between hope and dread, and he cannot hold still. The verse speaks to that moment. First it separates what was his, the care he gave, from what was never his to decide, the result. Then it asks him to rest on the first. His breathing can slow, and he can sit beside her without bargaining. Afterward, whatever the doctor says, he can know the care was whole. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind fixed on an outcome it cannot control tires quickly and acts worse. The verse speaks of freedom from birth and death and of a state free from suffering, and the text offers that as its own teaching of where such work leads. In the waiting room, what it does not promise is that the news will be good, that grief will be spared, or that medical care can be set aside.
