Meaning · English

The mind of men is made of karma, joined with the five senses. It goes from world to world, and the self, which is other than it, follows. Dwelling on things seen or only heard of, the mind, bound to its karma, rises and sinks, and memory of the earlier state fades away. Through absorption in objects a being does not recall the self again. For one cause or another, death is complete forgetting.

Krishna begins with three words. Manas is the mind, the part that thinks, wants and remembers. Karmamaya means made of karma: shaped from what a person has done, wished and grown used to. Smriti is memory, the holding of what was before. Krishna says the mind, together with the five senses, travels from one world to the next. The self is a different thing and goes along with it. The commentators read this as the self being the one who is carried, not the one who is made of the mind's stuff. Then he says how the mind moves. It dwells on what it has seen and on what it has only heard about. It rises, then sinks, as its karma pulls. Each new state covers the one before, and memory of the earlier state fades. Absorption in objects is the cause. A being so absorbed does not remember the self, and Krishna calls death a complete forgetting. The teaching answers Uddhava's question about how beings take high and low bodies by their own deeds. Krishna's reply is that the traveller is the karma-made mind, and that forgetting is what makes the journey feel like a series of new starts. He asks the listener to see the mind as a carried thing and to see that the one who watches it is not made of it.

A man moves house with a box of old letters. The truck carries the box, with everything written in it, to the new town, and the man walks in behind it. The box is the karma-made mind, loaded and travelling. The man is the self that follows, and he is not the paper.

1. This evening, sit for five minutes with a cup of tea and no phone. 2. Notice where the mind goes first: something seen today, or something only heard about. Name each one silently. 3. When it sinks into one, count how many breaths pass before you notice you were gone. 4. Say to yourself, "I am the one who noticed." Stop there and carry on with your evening.

A woman stands at a bus stop, replaying a sharp word her sister said last week. Two buses pass. She does not see them, and for a minute she could not have said where she was or why she came. The verse speaks to that minute. The mind has taken one remembered thing and filled the whole room with it. Krishna calls this absorption, and it is how memory of oneself fades. What the verse changes is small. When she notices the bus has gone, the noticing itself is the self that follows the mind, and it is not the argument. She can name the thought as a thing the mind is carrying. Then she can look up and find the next bus. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind fixed on one worry loses the street around it. The verse does not promise the worry will stop or the quarrel mend. It does not treat deep distress as something to be handled alone, and a person who cannot stop such thoughts should speak to a doctor.
