Birth as Taking Hold

Bhagavata Purana 11.22.40

Meaning · English

Birth, generous Uddhava, is a person taking objects as his own self, with his whole being. The wise call it the acceptance of objects, like a dream or a daydream. A man does not remember an earlier dream or fancy. In the same way he does not remember what came before. In the new state he sees himself as if he were the same as before, and yet as something new.

Three words carry the verse. Atmata is taking something as oneself, from atman, the self. Vishaya-svikriti is the acceptance of objects: vishaya is whatever the senses and mind can grasp, and svikriti is making it one's own. Manoratha is a daydream, literally a chariot of the mind. Krishna tells Uddhava that birth, in the sense that matters here, is not only a body appearing. It is the self folding itself into objects until it says 'this is me' and means it with everything it has. The wise, he says, call this accepting objects, and it works like a dream or a daydream. Inside a dream the dreamer holds it as real. He also keeps no memory of earlier dreams. So a being in a new birth does not recall what came before. It looks at itself as if it were the old person, and also as wholly new. Both feelings arrive together. Uddhava had asked how beings take up and drop bodies, high and low. Krishna answers by turning the question inward: the forgetting is part of the clinging. The verse asks the listener to notice how total this taking-as-self is, and how little memory stands behind it.

A man sits through a gripping film and finds, when the lights come up, that his hand has been clamped on the armrest the whole time. He had forgotten the seat, the room and himself. The clamped hand is the self gripping objects as its own, and the lights coming up are the moment the grip is seen.

1. Tonight, pick one thing you are gripping hard: an argument, a purchase, a worry. Write one line: 'I am taking this as me.' 2. Sit for two minutes and ask whether you would be less yourself without it. Just notice the answer. 3. Tomorrow morning, when you wake, recall a dream if you have one. Notice how quickly it fades while the day's worries stay.

A man wakes at four in the morning from a vivid dream in which he was being chased through his old school. His heart is pounding. By the time he has made tea, the dream has gone thin, and he can barely say what it was. The worry about the loan has not gone thin at all. Krishna's teaching changes that moment in steps. First, the dream was real while it lasted, and that is what the verse says about taking objects as oneself: from inside, there is no gap to see through. Second, the forgetting is part of the picture, since the dreamer never remembers earlier dreams. Third, the man can ask what else he is holding with the same total grip, and whether the loan is held the way the chase was. Ordinary experience confirms that dreams fade within minutes of waking. The verse does not say the loan is not owed, and it does not take away fear or the need to act. It points to the grip, not the debt.
