Nature Withdraws Once Seen

Samkhya Karika 61

Meaning · English

Nothing, I think, is shyer than prakriti. Once she knows, 'I have been seen,' she never again comes into the sight of purusha.

The question is what happens when a person finally sees clearly. Samkhya names two realities. Purusha is the witness, pure consciousness that only watches. Prakriti is nature, everything that changes: body, mind, feelings and world. Ishvarakrishna's answer is a portrait. Prakriti is the shyest thing there is. Once she knows a particular witness has truly seen her as other than itself, she stops showing herself to that witness. Samkhya holds that her whole display exists for the witness's sake. When the seeing is complete, nothing is left to show. Gaudapada adds a further point: nature needs no cause behind her. A God without qualities could not produce a world full of qualities, just as white threads weave only white cloth. Time and plain 'spontaneity' are parts of the changing world, so they cannot stand behind it. Prakriti is cause enough. She is made of the three gunas, the strands of clarity, activity and inertia. So for Samkhya, freedom is not an escape. Nature quietly withdraws.

Picture someone singing alone in a kitchen. They turn and see a person standing in the doorway. The song stops, and it does not start again while that listener is there. The singing is nature's ongoing show of thoughts, moods and world. The glance at the doorway is the moment of clear seeing. The silence that follows is freedom for that one witness.

Two ideas meet here. The first is dualism: a watching consciousness apart from everything that changes. Physicalism rejects that split. Neuroscience has mapped much of how perception and feeling depend on the brain. It has not explained why any of this is felt at all. That gap, the hard problem of consciousness, remains open. Psychology offers a loose parallel to the shyness image. Seeing a habit or a mood clearly can loosen its grip, as in work on mindfulness and reappraisal. But there is no evidence that experience as a whole stops for good. The second idea is Gaudapada's claim that an effect must resemble its cause. Modern physics allows new properties to emerge from simple parts. That challenges the white-thread argument, though it does not settle whether a creator exists.
