Who Is Really Bound
Samkhya Karika 62

Therefore no one, in truth, is bound, no one is freed, no one wanders from life to life. It is prakriti, resting on many supports, that wanders, is bound and is freed.
The question is pressing: if Samkhya says purusha, pure consciousness, never changes, who suffers and who gets free? Purusha, Samkhya holds, is never bound, never freed, and never travels from one life to the next. All three belong to prakriti, nature, everything that changes. Gaudapada gives the reason. Purusha is free by its own nature and present everywhere. Wandering means going somewhere you are not yet, so something everywhere has nowhere to go. What travels is the subtle body, a bundle made of prakriti. It holds the intellect, the sense of 'I', the senses, and the fine elements behind sound, touch, sight, taste and smell. It carries the weight of good and bad deeds. It takes up many supports, the bodies of gods, humans and animals, and that is the 'many' in the verse. Saying the person is bound is a figure of speech. So freedom is not a change in purusha. Once the difference between intellect and purusha is known, purusha shows as what it always was: alone, clear, standing in itself.
Carry a bucket of water across a sunny yard. The sun's reflection rides along in it. It shakes, it breaks into pieces when the water sloshes, and it vanishes when the bucket is set in shade. The sun itself never moved. The water and its trembling stand for prakriti's travels and troubles. The unmoved sun stands for purusha.
Samkhya is a dualism, but an unusual one. It puts thinking, memory, the sense of self and decision-making on the side of matter. Only bare awareness stands apart. On the first half, modern neuroscience broadly agrees: intellect, personality and choice depend closely on the brain and change when it changes. On the second half, the question is still open. Physicalists hold that awareness is also what the brain does. Others argue that the hard problem of consciousness, why any of this is felt at all, has not been solved. Samkhya's own puzzle remains too: how an untouched witness relates to a working mind. Some therapies speak of an 'observing self' that watches thoughts without being them, a loose echo. The subtle body travelling between lives has no support in today's evidence.
