Nothing Obstructs Shiva
Spanda Karika 1.2
Meaning · English
That in which all this rests, and from which every effect has come forth: because its nature is never veiled, there is no obstruction to it anywhere, in any place.
Three words carry it. Kārya means what is made, an effect, from kṛ, to do. It covers everything in the world: things, moods, events. Anāvṛta means unveiled, from vṛ, to cover, with a- for not. Nirodha means obstruction or holding back, from rudh, to hold in check. The first clause says all this rests in one place, Shiva, who is consciousness itself. The second says every effect has come out of him. The third gives the reason: his true form is never covered over, so nothing can hold him back, anywhere. The earlier stanza bowed to Shankara, whose opening and closing of the eyes brings the world's rising and dissolving. A reader will ask whether anything can stand in the way of that source. The Spanda Karikas answer no, and the reason is that nothing can cover what is already bare. Whatever appears is an effect of him, so it cannot be a wall against him. Kallata's Vritti and Kshemaraja's Spanda-nirnaya read this as the ground for everything that follows about the throb of consciousness. The text asks the listener to see that what knows, in every state, is not shut out by what it knows.
Clouds pile up, birds cross, a plane draws a line, and a storm comes and goes. The open sky holds all of it, and none of it blocks the sky. Whatever fills the sky is an effect, and the sky itself stays uncovered. In the teaching, Shiva is that open sky and the world is what moves through it.
1. Today, sit for three minutes by a window or in a quiet corner, with nothing to do. 2. Let sounds, thoughts and body sensations come and go. Do not push any away. 3. Ask once: was there any moment when the knowing of these things stopped? Notice that the knowing was there before each one arrived and after it left. 4. Repeat for two minutes just before sleep, and notice that the same open knowing is there.
A man reaches the bus stop for an interview and finds the route cancelled. His chest tightens, and everything seems to be blocked at once: the bus, the morning, the job. The verse speaks to that feeling of being stopped. The text teaches that everything that arises rests in an awareness that no event covers. In the moment, he can notice that the anger and the worry are things being seen, and that the one seeing is still clear. He breathes out slowly, and the panic stops running the plan. Then he does the ordinary thing: phones the employer, looks for another route, asks a neighbour for a lift. The limit is plain. The verse does not bring the bus back, undo the missed hour, or promise the interview goes well. It speaks of the knowing in which the trouble appears, not of the trouble's outcome. Ordinary experience does show that a feeling named and watched grips less tightly than one we are lost inside.
