The Knower Behind Changing States

Spanda Karika 1.3

Meaning · English

Though waking, dreaming and the other states differ from one another, the awareness running through them is not different from them. It moves along in each, and it never turns away from the knower's own nature.

Three words carry the verse. Jagrat is waking, the first of the states. Upalabdhr is the one who perceives, from upa-labh, to get hold of or take in: the knower. Svabhava is own-nature, what a thing is by itself. The Spanda Karikas say that waking, dream and the rest differ from each other. What is known in each is different, and so is the feel of each. But the awareness that moves through them is not split up along with them. It is not one thing in the day and another at night. It spreads along every state, and it never leaves the knower's own nature, because it is that nature. The teaching comes just after the claim that nothing obstructs Shiva's power. It answers a plain question: if experience keeps changing, what stays? The text points to the knowing itself. The commentators take this as the same throb of consciousness the Karikas speak of throughout. The verse asks the listener to see that every state arrives already known, and that the one who knows does not come and go with it.

A single thread runs through a string of beads. The beads are different colours and sizes, and each one passes by in turn, yet the thread is in every one of them and does not change. The states are the beads, and the knowing that goes through them all is the thread.

1. Tonight, as you lie down, notice the last thing you are aware of before sleep. 2. In the morning, before you move, notice that you are already aware, and that you know a night has passed. 3. Once during the day, when your mood shifts, say quietly: "This is known." Stay with the one who knows it for three breaths.

A woman wakes in a hotel room after a long flight. For a few seconds she does not know the city, the bed or the hour. Then the room settles, and she knows she is the one who came here last night. The verse speaks to that moment. The state has changed, from deep sleep to wakefulness, but she does not doubt that someone woke. She does not have to build herself from nothing. She can rest on that plain knowing while the details catch up, and let the confusion pass without chasing it. The text teaches that this knowing runs through waking, dream and sleep alike. Ordinary experience agrees that we wake knowing a night has passed and that we dreamed, though we cannot say how. The verse does not promise a calm mind in that moment, or cure broken sleep, jet lag or night fears. Where sleep is badly disturbed for weeks, a doctor is the right person to ask.
