The Thread Through Joy and Sorrow
Spanda Karika 1.4
Meaning · English
"I am happy," "I am sorrowful," "I am infatuated": such awarenesses are strung along the passing states of pleasure and the rest, yet they plainly occur elsewhere too, outside each of them.
Three words carry the verse. Samvid means awareness, from sam (together) and vid (to know): the knowing that holds an experience. Anusyuta means threaded through, from anu (along) and syu (to sew): a string running through beads. Rakta means coloured or stained, so here "I am attached, infatuated", as cloth takes a dye. The Spanda Karikas begin with how we speak: "I am happy," "I am sorrowful," "I am caught up in it." Each sentence is an awareness, and each is strung along a state of pleasure, pain or longing. Then the teaching turns on the last words: these awarenesses plainly show up elsewhere too. The sentence "I am sad" cannot belong only to sadness, because it was also there in joy, and will be there in the next mood. The feelings change. The knowing of them does not change with them. The commentators read it as pointing to the one awareness that stays when a given feeling has gone. This answers the question left open in the verses before it: how can one awareness continue through every kind of experience? Everyday speech already shows it. The verse asks the listener to notice that the "I" in each sentence is the same one.
Beads of red, blue and black glass are strung on one cotton thread. Each bead has its own colour, and each is put on and taken off. The thread passes through all of them and takes no colour from any. The beads are the passing feelings. The thread is the awareness that says "I am" in each.
1. Today, when a feeling is strong, say its sentence quietly: "I am irritated" or "I am pleased." 2. Ask once: who is aware of this? Stay with the question about ten seconds, no longer. 3. Tonight, recall one morning feeling and one evening feeling. Notice that the one who remembers both is the same. 4. Do this on a few ordinary days, and keep it light.
A father stands at his daughter's wedding. The music is loud and he is proud, and an hour ago the bank refused the loan for his shop. His face smiles while his stomach knots. He thinks: which of these is really me? Take the verse step by step. He says inside, "I am happy," and then, "I am afraid." Both are sentences, and something knows each of them. That something did not change when the mood did. He no longer has to pick a winner between the two feelings. He can greet the guests with one and plan Monday's phone call with the other. Ordinary experience agrees that a feeling named aloud loosens a little. The verse does not promise that the fear will leave or the loan will come through. Worry that keeps a person awake, or a low mood that lasts for weeks, is something to take to a doctor, not only to sit with. The verse offers a steadier place to stand while the feelings go on.
