Where Nothing Is Divided

Spanda Karika 1.5

Meaning · English

Where there is no pain and no pleasure, no thing grasped and no one grasping, and not even the state of being deluded, that alone is real in the highest sense.

Three Sanskrit words carry the verse. Duhkha is pain and sukha is pleasure; the sense of both is a pair that pulls against each other. Grahya is what is grasped, the object, from the root grah, to seize. Grahaka is the one who grasps, the subject. Mudhabhava is the state of being bewildered, from muh, to be dulled or confused. Paramartha means the highest sense of what is real, literally the final aim or meaning. The verse names five things and takes each away: pain, pleasure, the object, the knower, and even bewilderment. Whatever remains when all five are set aside is what the text calls real in the fullest sense. The odd item is delusion. The text does not stop at calling ordinary experience a mistake. It says that even being deluded belongs to the divided world and is not found in the ground itself. It is taught here because the verses before it have just traced the one knower running through changing states. A reader would then ask what that knower is when no state is on it. The answer given is that nothing is there to divide it. The commentators read this as the Spanda principle seen before it divides into experiencer and experienced. The listener is asked to stop taking the swing between joy and sorrow, and the split between self and thing, as the whole of what is.

Think of a still pond at dawn before any wind. No ripple, no reflection of a branch, no leaf floating on it, only water. Every ripple and every reflection that comes later is made of that same water. The pond stands for the ground the verse points to, where subject, object and mood have not yet appeared.

1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for two minutes with the lights low. 2. Let one feeling of the day come, a worry or a small pleasure, and notice that it arrives and leaves while you stay. 3. Notice the moment between one thought and the next, however short. Do not try to hold it. 4. Say nothing about it to yourself. Just note that the gap was there, and go to bed.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at three in the morning, waiting for news about his brother's surgery. His mind runs in two tracks: the fear, and the watcher who keeps asking whether he is coping. Both feel like all of him. The verse points at something quieter than both. Fear is one thing, the one who is afraid is another, and the awful waiting is a third. The text teaches that behind this division there is a ground where none of these has yet been cut out. He cannot reach it by effort, but he can notice that the fear is arriving and leaving, and that something steady is present for each wave. His breathing slows a little, and the corridor becomes just a corridor with a clock in it. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: attention that rests, even briefly, usually loosens the grip of a strong feeling. The verse does not promise the surgery will go well, nor that the fear will stop. It does not replace the surgeon, the nurse or a doctor's care for his own sleep and body.
