Because this company of senses, though deluded, acts as if it were not deluded, it gains its rising, its staying and its withdrawal together with the inner wheel. So that principle is to be examined with effort and with care, for its freedom is present everywhere, and it is not made.

Three words carry the teaching. Karana-varga is the company of instruments: eyes, ears, hands, the working organs. Cakra is the wheel, the inner machinery behind them that the commentators take as the mind's own working. Svatantrata is freedom, from sva, own, and tantra, thread or rule: living by one's own rule, not another's. Now the clauses. The Spanda Karikas say the senses are deluded, yet they behave as if they knew what they were doing. Together with the inner wheel they move through three phases: a thing rises, it stays, it is withdrawn. Every look, thought and act follows that round. Because the senses seem so sure of themselves, nobody doubts them. The teaching is given here to answer a plain question: if the senses run on their own, who is in charge? The text's answer is to examine the principle behind them. It asks for effort and care, not a quick glance. What is found is a freedom that is present everywhere and is akrtrima, not manufactured. Nobody builds it or earns it, and it is there even while the wheel turns. So the text asks the listener for patient looking at what stands behind seeing and thinking, and does not ask for a fight with the senses.

Think of driving a road you know by heart and arriving home with no memory of the turns. Hands and eyes handled everything, as if awake. They were not deciding; habit was running them. The senses and the inner wheel work this way, and the text points to the one who was there all along.

1. Choose one ordinary act today, such as drinking your first cup of tea or washing your hands. 2. Do it slowly for two or three minutes, and watch your hands and eyes do it. 3. Notice the small moment when you start, when you continue, and when you stop. Ask yourself who noticed each one. 4. Once this week, catch a habitual reach, such as for the phone, just before it happens. Let it pause for one breath.

A mother is at the dinner table after a long day. Her son spills water, and her sharp words are out before she has decided anything. A moment later she wonders where that voice came from. The verse speaks to exactly this. The reply felt like her own choice, yet it ran by itself, hand in hand with a tired mind. Seeing that is the first step the text asks for: the reply rose, stayed, and ended, and something in her watched it happen. With that watching, she can say one slow sentence, "Let me get a towel," and let the next reply be chosen. Ordinary experience agrees that tiredness makes reactions quicker than thoughts. The text goes further and says the one who watches is free, and that this freedom was never made. The verse does not promise the sharp word will never come, and it does not take away the tiredness or the day's troubles. It asks her to look with care at the wheel while it turns.
