Touching Your Own Strength

Meaning · English

This does not work by pushing the will into motion. Rather, when a person touches the strength of the self, he becomes equal to it.

Three words carry the verse. Iccha is will, the wish that drives a person toward a goal. Preraka is one who pushes or impels, from the root ir, to set moving. Atmabala is the strength of the self: atman, one's own being, and bala, strength. Sparsha is touch, a contact so close that nothing stands between. The verse says the throb of consciousness, spanda, does not work as a pusher of the will. It is not a force a person switches on by wanting it harder. Instead, a person touches the strength of his own self, and in that touch he becomes equal to it. The word is samah, level with, of the same kind. This is taught because the verses before it show the faculties acting in bewilderment, yet never cut off from a freedom that is natural to them. The natural next question is how a person gets to that freedom. The Spanda Karikas answer that effort of wanting does not reach it, because it is already what he is. It is met by contact, not produced by pressure. For the listener, the verse asks for a change in how striving is understood: less pushing, more arriving at what is already there.

A swimmer thrashes in a pool, certain it is deep, and tires himself out. Then he lets one foot drop and finds the floor, firm and already there. Thrashing is the pushing will. The floor is the strength of the self, and standing on it is becoming equal to it.

1. Tonight, when you notice yourself straining at something, such as a worry or a task you cannot finish, stop for one minute. 2. Sit or stand and feel your weight held by the chair or floor. Let your breath go on without steering it. 3. Notice what is still steady while the straining stops. Stay with that for the minute. 4. Then go back to the task and see whether it is pushed or simply done.

A man lies awake at three in the morning, ordering himself to sleep. The harder he commands, the more alert he becomes, and he starts counting the hours left. Ordinary experience confirms that sleep does not obey orders. The verse speaks to exactly this kind of moment. The Spanda Karikas teach that the self's strength is not fetched by the pushing will. So he stops pushing. He feels the mattress under his back and the weight of his legs. He lets the breath come and go unmanaged. In that quiet he meets something that was there all along, steady beneath the noise of wanting. In the text's terms, he touches it and is level with it, instead of chasing it. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that sleep will come, and it does not cure insomnia. Long-lasting sleeplessness is something to take to a doctor. What the verse offers is a different footing for the night, whether or not sleep follows.
