Meaning · English

For one made unable by his own impurity, who hungers over the things that must be done: when the agitation dissolves, then the supreme state would arise.

Four terms carry the verse. Ashuddhi is impurity, literally not-cleanness. Here it is one's own clouding, which leaves a person unable, asamartha, to do what he wants. Abhilashin is one who longs, who keeps reaching toward the tasks in front of him. Kshobha, from a root meaning to be shaken, is agitation: the churning that starts when longing runs ahead of ability. Pada is a state, literally a footing or step, and paramam makes it the highest footing. The plain sense is this. A person is weak through his own clouding, and still he hungers over everything that must be done. The text does not blame the longing or the tasks. It names the shaking as the trouble. When the shaking dissolves, melts back into where it rose, the supreme footing is there. No new effort is named as its cause. It arises when agitation goes. The commentators read that footing as the self's own ground, which agitation had been covering. This answers a question left open by the verse before it. If strength is touched and never forced, what of the person who feels too weak and too driven to touch anything? The teaching says the first thing to look at is the agitation, not the weakness.

A jar of pond water is shaken and looks like brown soup. Left on the shelf, the silt sinks by itself and the water clears, with nothing added. The shaking is the agitation, the clear water is the supreme state, and settling does the work.

1. Today, when a long list of tasks starts to churn in you, stop for one minute and sit or stand still. 2. Notice where the shaking sits: chest, jaw, stomach, breath. Name it silently as agitation, apart from the tasks themselves. 3. Add nothing to it. Let it run on without feeding it, until it thins even a little. 4. Then do just one task from the list and notice whether your hands work differently.

A tailor, two nights before a festival, sits among thirty unfinished orders. He is tired, his hands are clumsy, and every stitched hem reminds him of five unstitched ones. He keeps reaching for the next thing and finishing nothing. The verse speaks to exactly this: his wish to do is sound, and the churning around it is what spoils his hands. First step: he sees that the shaking is separate from the work. Second step: he lets it sink, without arguing with it, as the text says it dissolves. Third step: one garment is taken up with a steadier hand, then the next. Ordinary experience confirms that a racing mind makes careful work worse, and that a steadier moment often costs only a few breaths. The verse does not promise the orders will be done in time, does not take away tiredness, and does not replace rest, food or a doctor when the body is failing. It speaks of the agitation, and leaves the deadline where it was.
