Knowing and Making

Spanda Karika 1.10

Meaning · English

Then this is its own nature, not made up by anyone: it is marked by knowing and by doing. Whatever is wished for, it knows all of it, and it makes all of it.

Three words carry the teaching. Akrtrima means not made, not artificial: a-, not, and krta, made, from the root kr, to make. Jnatva is knowing-ness, the plain fact of being one who knows. Kartrtva is doing-ness, being one who makes, from the same root kr. Together they are the lakshana, the mark by which this nature is recognised. The text says that when the stir has settled and the highest state is reached, as the previous verse describes, that state is not a blank. Its nature is knowing and making, and nobody has trained it into that nature or fitted it on from outside. The last clause gives the reason: whatever is wished for, it knows, and it also makes. Wish, knowledge and action are not three separate jobs done by three separate workers. The question behind the verse is what is left once craving has quieted and the restless pull has dissolved. The answer is that the power to know and the power to act remain, and they are the self's own. The commentators read this as Shiva's own knowing and doing, which the practitioner recognises as his own and does not borrow. The verse asks the listener to see that knowing and doing are not foreign tools but the very nature of the one who is listening.

A lamp does not first decide to light the room and then go looking for brightness. Burning and showing happen together, and the walls, the table and the doorway are seen because that is what the flame is. Knowing and making, in the verse, are like that: not two tasks added to the self but what the self already is.

1. Once today, when you do something you know well, such as making tea or tying a shoe, watch for the moment where knowing and doing are one movement. 2. Notice that nobody gave you a command; the hand simply knew. 3. Then, before a small wish arises, such as reaching for water, notice that the wish, the knowing of where the glass is, and the reaching come almost together. 4. Spend one minute on this and then go on with your day.

A ferry boatman wakes before dawn and walks to the landing. He has crossed this river for thirty years. A cloud has covered the far bank, the current has shifted after rain, and a passenger is shouting from the steps. He does not stop to work out the crossing. His hands read the water and the pole is already set before he could say why. Step by step, the verse speaks to this moment: the wish to cross, the knowing of the water and the doing of the crossing do not arrive as three separate acts. Ordinary experience confirms that a practised skill feels like this, with the knowing already inside the movement. The text teaches something larger, that this joined knowing and making is the self's own nature and not a skill acquired. The verse does not promise that any craft is learned without years of repetition, and it does not make the boatman safe on a flooded river. Where the water is truly dangerous, he still needs a second opinion, a rope and a warning from the village.
