Smiling at Your Own Nature

Spanda Karika 1.11

Meaning · English

One who stays as the witness, looking on his own nature, and rests there as though quietly smiling: how could this wrong road be his?

Three words carry the verse. Adhishthatri-bhava is standing as the one who presides, from adhi-stha, to stand over. It means being the witness, not the one tossed about. Svabhava is own nature, sva (own) and bhava (being). Kusriti is the wrong path, ku (bad) and sriti (a going, a road). The verse begins with a person who stays as witness and looks at his own nature, not at some far-off thing. He does not grip it or fight it. He rests there as though smiling, the ease of someone who recognises a face he has always known. Then comes a question, not a command: how could the wrong road be his? The answer is that it could not. The wrong road is the life of being dragged by every passing want and fear, and the witness is not on it. The verses before spoke of the natural state, where agitation has dissolved and knowing and doing are one's own. This verse says how one stays there: by watching from one's own nature, not by adding effort. The commentators take the wrong path to be the way of bondage. The verse asks nothing hard of the listener except to stand where the witness stands.

A man sits on a riverbank at a village fair and watches the crowd push past. He knows the faces and enjoys the noise. He is not carried along by it. The crowd is the mind's moods and cravings, and the bank is the witness, from which the wrong road is simply not the road he is on.

1. Pick one small irritation today, such as a slow queue or a delayed reply. 2. When it rises, stop for the length of three breaths and say silently, "I am the one watching this." 3. Notice the feeling as something in front of you, with a place and a shape, and let the corners of your mouth ease slightly. 4. Then go on with what you were doing. Do this once or twice today, nothing more.

A taxi driver is stuck at a closed railway crossing with a passenger already late. His jaw is tight, his hands drum the wheel, and he is rehearsing what he will say. Now picture the verse in that moment. First he notices he is angry, which already puts a little distance between him and the anger. Then he sees it as his own mood, passing through him, not the whole of him. His shoulders drop, his breath slows, and he can tell the passenger plainly that the train has stopped them both. Ordinary experience bears out that naming a feeling loosens its grip a little. The verse does not promise the train will move sooner, that anger will never come, or that grief and illness will pass lightly. Where a body or mind is truly unwell, a doctor is still the right person to see. What it offers is a place to stand while the weather passes.
