Spanda Karika 1.12
Meaning · English
What is not never comes to be, and where this is seen no bewilderment remains. For when focused effort touches it, the certainty arises: it was there all along.
Three words carry it. Bhava is being, what is; abhava is its opposite, non-being, what is not. Abhiyoga is focused effort, from abhi, toward, and yuj, to join: effort that turns and joins itself to something. Mudhata is bewilderment, from muh, to be dazed. The first line says that what is not never turns into what is. Nothing comes out of nothing. So the awareness a yogi finds cannot have been produced by the finding. The second line follows: where this is understood, no bewilderment is left, because there is no longer a question of whether effort makes the thing or merely meets it. The third and fourth lines give the reason. When focused effort touches it, the certainty, nishchaya, a settled conclusion, arises in the form 'it was.' It was already there. It is taught here because the earlier verses say the self's nature is knowing and doing. The natural question is then what the yogi's effort achieves. The Spanda Karikas answer that effort creates nothing. It only touches what is present. The commentators read the verse this way, as a statement about discovery, not manufacture. What it asks of a listener is a change of expectation. The work is to turn toward what is always there, not to build it.
A man comes home in a power cut and feels along the wall for the switch. His hand finds it, the light comes on, and the room is as it always was: sofa, table, shelves. His fumbling did not furnish the room. It only reached the switch. The effort is the groping hand, and the awareness it reaches is the room that was already there.
1. Once this morning, stop for one minute and ask quietly, 'Am I aware right now?' 2. Notice that the awareness was there before you asked. The asking did not produce it. 3. Repeat at midday and again in the evening, for one minute each. 4. At night, recall which moment felt most like finding something and which like making something. Just notice the difference.
A retired schoolteacher turns her flat upside down looking for her spectacles. She checks the kitchen, the bed, the coat pockets, and then her hand meets them on top of her head. They were there the whole time. Her searching did not bring them into being. It brought her attention to where they already were. The text teaches the same of awareness: effort does not make it, it meets it, and the result is certainty, not a new possession. In that moment, the verse changes the question. She stops asking whether she has lost something and notices that the frantic searching itself needed her awareness to be present. Ordinary experience agrees that a ticking clock in a quiet room was sounding before it was noticed. The verse does not promise that every search ends so neatly, that lost things are found, or that attention can replace a doctor when her eyesight is failing. It speaks of awareness, not of spectacles.
